Jack McNabb

Jack is currently a senior at UIUC studying Sociology. He recently finished his minors in Business and Informatics. Jack was a research assistant for Prof. Reuben May last fall. He assisted in data collection and field research in Prof. May’s ongoing Urban Nightlife research. During his field research, Jack was able to gain more insights into what research in sociology looks like. He pointed out that sociological research needs hard data just like every other scientific research does: “Data collection is just as critical as observations to sociological research.” This research experience also provided Jack with a new perspective of looking at our society. Before working on this project, Jack did not suspect that racial profiling or discrimination would be involved in the nightlife. He was able to explore the topic through data collection during his field research.

When it comes to giving advice on finding research opportunities, Jack said: “Don’t be afraid to reach out! Talk to professors that you’ve had and enjoyed. You will be surprised at the number of professors that are looking for undergraduate research opportunities.” He also mentioned that it is important to build a relationship with the professors. Office hours would be a great way to learn more about professors and their research. If they do not have current projects that you can work on, there is a chance that they can refer you to other professors in the department.

Jack now works as an intern in the Champaign County State Attorney’s Office and is preparing for his upcoming LSAT. He also works at the ARC as a program assistant. During his free time, Jack likes to work out and play basketball in ARC. He enjoys watching sports and reading as well. Speaking of the major, Jack said that sociology prepares him for many things and the interdisciplinary skills he gained can be used in many aspects of his life and career.
